ABOUT COOPER
Flutist Cooper Reed is a strong and well-versed performer of solo, orchestral and chamber music. Originally from Calgary, Alberta, Cooper’s love of music began at an early age, during her years enrolled in Kodály programs. A few years later, she began to learn the flute and spent many years studying with Janet Ward and Deanna MacGregor.
Cooper has played flute and piccolo in many ensembles across Canada. During her studies, she was a prominent member of the University of Victoria Orchestra, University of Victoria Wind Symphony and Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra. She also regularly performed with community groups like the Victoria Chamber Orchestra. Shortly after graduation, she took part in the Vancouver Intercultural Orchestra's inaugural Summer Academy and was a member of the Denis Wick Canadian Wind Orchestra.
Now established back in her home town, Cooper is currently the co-principal flute of the Calgary Civic Symphony and regularly performs with Alberta Winds, The Rocky Mountain Symphony Orchestra and other prominent groups around the city. She teaches privately and has taught many band clinics for young flute students since moving back to Calgary. Cooper is also a member of the Calgary Civic Symphony Flute Ensemble, performing regularly for audiences in Calgary and Airdrie.
Cooper holds a Bachelor of Music in Performance from the University of Victoria, where she studied with Dr. Mark McGregor and Dr. Suzanne Snizek. She has also been fortunate enough to work with world-renowned flute players during her studies including; Lorna McGhee, Sara Hahn, Solie Stratkauskas, Derek Jones, Torrey Kaminski and Kate Prestia-Schaub. Cooper is also a passionate educator, and holds a Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Education from the University of Calgary. When Cooper is not performing or playing the flute, she spends her days teaching kindergarten!
