ABOUT COOPER
Flutist Cooper Reed is a strong and well-versed performer of solo, orchestral and chamber music. Originally from Calgary, Alberta, Cooper’s love of music began at an early age, during her years enrolled in Kodály programs. A few years later, she began to learn the flute and spent many years studying with Janet Ward and Deanna MacGregor.
Cooper has played flute and piccolo in many ensembles across Canada. During her studies, she held the positions of principal flute and piccolo with the University of Victoria Symphony Orchestra and principal piccolo of the University of Victoria Wind Symphony. Cooper also played flute and piccolo with the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra from 2015-2017.
Throughout her time living in Victoria, Cooper had the opportunity to perform with many prominent chamber groups including the Victoria Chamber Orchestra and the University of Victoria’s new music ensemble, Sonic Lab. Cooper has also been fortunate enough to work with world-renowned flute players during her studies including; Lorna McGhee, Sara Hahn, Solie Stratkauskas, Derek Jones, Torrey Kaminski and Kate Prestia-Schaub.
In the spring of 2017, Cooper received her Bachelor of Music degree with a major in performance from the University of Victoria, under the guidance of Dr. Mark McGregor and Dr. Suzanne Snizek. Cooper worked with her teacher Mark McGregor and other acclaimed musicians on contemporary and traditional music from different cultures, including Chinese, Japanese, and Arabic music.
In early 2018, Cooper was accepted into the Denis Wick Canadian Wind Orchestra and traveled to Toronto to perform with the ensemble at MusicFest Canada.
